Ecological and potential socioeconomic impacts of two globally-invasive crayfish

چکیده

Quantifying the impacts of invasive species, relative to native analogues, is crucial for management and policy development. Two freshwater crayfish species global concern, Cherax quadricarinatus Procambarus clarkii , have established populations across Africa. Negative on biodiversity socioeconomic been documented in other continents; however, there a paucity information from Africa C. . To fill this literature gap, study used laboratory experiments determine potential ecological conferred by functionally similar analogue, river crab Potamonautes perlatus two static, but different resources. Consumption rates were derived three focal consuming macrophyte Potamogeton nodosus dead Oreochromis mossambicus under temperatures regimes (19 °C 28 °C), representing summer winter seasons Southern Africa, with maximum feeding rate infer impact. represents ecologically-important nutrient cycling macrophytes, as well habitat juvenile fish, whereas O. was proxy fish catches artisanal gillnet fisheries often scavenged crayfish. both resources all decapods increased temperature. However, showed impact trends where P. had significantly higher consumption macrophytes than regardless temperature same seen, scavenging fish. Crayfish introductions clearly highly destructive invaded systems compared crabs. The disparity between resource use emphasises necessity appropriate geographical species-specific contexts avoid erroneous conclusions generalised risk assessments. Derived can be rapid assessments comparisons invasion cores.

Global ecological impacts of invasive species in aquatic ecosystems.

The introduction of invasive species, which often differ functionally from the components of the recipient community, generates ecological impacts that propagate along the food web. This review aims to determine how consistent the impacts of aquatic invasions are across taxa and habitats. To that end, we present a global meta-analysis from 151 publications (733 cases), covering a wide range of ...

South Texas Climate 2100: Potential Ecological and Wildlife Impacts

In South Texas, the impacts of increased temperature and atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO 2) on the ecological relationships that provide the foundations for wildlife habitats and populations are potentially huge, but largely unknown at present. This is because little research attention has been paid to this issue, which is unfortunate because wildlife are culturally and economically important in...

Potential ecological impacts of harvesting kina (Evechinus chloroticus) in Fiordland

High densities of Evechinus chloroticus are common in the rocky subtidal of outer Dusky Sound, Fiordland. Within this area, organisms are zonated into three habitats. These habitats are a shallow fucoid fringe; a mid-depth barren zone dominated by crustose forms (algae and sessile invertebrates) and devoid of most large algae; a deeper algal meadow where smaller herbaceous and turfing algae pre...

Symbionts of Invasive Insects: Characterization, Ecological Roles, and Relation to Invasive Potential and Management Strategies

Most, and perhaps all, multicellular organisms house symbiotic microorganisms. Recent research identified a number of ways in which symbionts are critical to the success of various insects, yet we know very little about the symbiotic associations of the major invasive species. The information we do have is largely limited to two specific types of relationships, insect vectors of plant pathogens...
